I gobbled this book up! I loved the magic system, the demonic system, the school, the characters of Saffy Walden and Laura Kenning. There’s something different, to me, about the language and pacing, but it’s hard to put my finger on - a deliberateness, maybe even a slightly academic tone that is very appropriate for Dr. Walden’s viewpoint.

I cared deeply for the characters, including Phoenix and the school itself, and was viscerally involved with the outcome. There were some choices made with the action that I felt blunted things, to my occasional frustration, but I loved this book and can’t wait for Tesh’s next.

Really enjoyed this book a lot! Thought it was going to send me into a reading slump afterwarss because I was sad to have finished the journey with these characters.

My only complaint was that I thought

Mark's threat wasn't shown very well. I'm a little confused about what he did and why it was so bad.
