I really enjoyed this. It is so nice to see a dark academia book told from the perspective of the teacher. You can tell Tesh spent many years in academia and anybody who has ever worked with teenagers or in a university for more than a couple years will really connect with aspects of this book.

The magic was interesting and the story keeps you engaged. So many big moments happen in the novel but I never felt it was too much. It did lose me a little bit at the end but I know why and have to go back and reread it. I can’t wait to mull this one over and reread it sometime soon!

This book is like your comfiest jammies on a Monday morning - delightful, well-made and warm, and you never want to leave them to put on real clothes.

DNF'd at ~28%! Not gonna lie, I fell asleep while listening to the audiobook and didn't care enough to go back. Just not my cup of tea...

This really hit a great balance between how a magic school might operate and how an actual school actually operates. Seeing all this from the perspective of a senior teacher within the system, rather than that of students, as is often the case in dark academia books, is really enlightening. Many times during this book, I found myself feeling nostalgic for my own years in sixth form.

The pacing was beautifully done, giving the world-building plenty of space to breathe and allowing the tension to build slowly until it all begins to go wrong.
