I really liked the writing but I feel like the romance wasn't as developed as it's made out to be. It's like they have chemistry but also...none of the build up or foundation, I don't know how to explain it but I squinted at my book multiple times while reading this book. I just didn't believe that Lou loved Reid and vice versa. I didn't understand where these feelings and thoughts were suddenly coming from when it felt like they barely talked or really got to know each other.
I did like the world she created and Coco and I'll probably read the second book whenever it comes out.

DNF'ed just over half way.
I really wanted to like this book and I just really didn't.
I didn't connect with the characters, I found Lou annoying and Reid boring.
The plot didn't seem to be going anywhere and I found a lot of the swearing unnecessary.
Disappointing.

Not sure how/why I just ate this book up completelyyyy. Such a great palette cleanser from all the romantasy out there. Although definitely in the same category it feels like the romance will be background to the plot in the second book. The world building felt pretty easy to follow and hopefully gets fleshed out in the following books.
I loved having my theory about Reid proved right. IYKYK

The book was good overall, minus a few scenes. I think the author could of explained the magic system and worldbuilding better. The enemies to lovers trope in this reminded me of the book "Daughter of the Pirate King", Alosa is really similar to Lou and the bantering between Alosa and Riden are the same as with Lou and Reid (so if you liked that book, you might like this one for that reason) I liked the characters overall too.
Now here are some characters from other books/films that remind me of the characters in Serpent and Dove:
• Coco = Bonnie Bennett from The Vampire Diaries, Coco is literally a Bonnie to Lou (aka Elena) and I love Bonnie and Coco they are my favorite characters
•Ansel = Grizz Visser from The Society, for some reason Ansel reminds me of Grizz probably because they are both Hufflepuffs and because they are both cute and sweet loving characters (I'd die for them both)
•Beau = Cardan Greenbrair from The Cruel Prince, he gives me Cardan vibes all the way he just needs a drink and he's literally Cardan
Songs that remind me of Serpent & Dove (out of context):
•Born to Die - Lana Del Rey
•Still Feel - half•alive
•Traitor - Olivia Rodrigo
