"Serpent & Dove" was in my FairyLoot box and I read it to get my mind off things. I didn't expect depth but I also didn't expect it to be this entertaining. (Blurb sounded really predictable and boring.) It was in some instances as funny and good as the "Throne of Glass" series, of course partly predictable. Our protagonist, Lou, is a witch, leading her hidden life in the city, trying not to be caught and burnt at the stake by the pseudo-Spanish-Inquisition in this sort-of-France. But of course everything changes when her only way to escape imprisonment means marrying a man of the church.
Usually I really hate this entire "arranged marriage" trope in fantasy novels (because I think it falsly romanticises and thus diminishes the reality of thousands of women and men having to marry a partner they did not want), but this was great fun. I also have a massive cold, so my standards aren't that high right now.
4 Stars, Fun!

Es un super llibre? No, pero sometimes a girl has to do what a girl has to do
Very good, loved the idea of the story, unique. Witch/witchhunter. Good set up to book 2. Only gave it an 4 because I felt like Reid changed his mind very quickly about Lou.
le sigh
I am very far in the minority here considering I have seen glowing 5 star reviews all over goodreads recently. I enjoyed it, it was entertaining, and the premise was interesting, but I didn’t think it was anything exceptional.
I really love Lou, and her relationship with Coco. I also adore Ansel. The first half was going so great and then it seemed like the entire plot took a few hundred leaps forward. (((Very vague spoiler here:: particularly Reid and Lou’s relationship suddenly progressing, and Reid forsaking everything he’s ever been taught overnight (this character development literally happened within a chapter))))
This might sound a little harsh, but you could almost tell this was the authors debut; it felt amateurish and a little cringey at times. I wanted to love it guys, I really really did, but alas, here we are.
ALSO, wtf was with that ending?!

4.5/5
I went into this book totally blind, and then spoiled some of it because I couldn't resist looking up the characters to see some fanart. i do be kinda dumb
n e ways, this was such a fun read! enemies to lovers and witches? sign me up
parts i liked:
-lou driving reid crazy
-lou and coco's friendship! <3
-ik some people disagree but i actually did think the book was funny sometimes
-
parts i didn't like so much:
-hardly any diversity
-that pub song was kinda funny the first three times they mentioned it, and then i was kinda over it. ESPECIALLY when they sang it it just made me roll my eyes.
-it felt like all the action was kinda squeezed into the end of the book, like it wasn't properly paced.
I've heard blood and honey isn't as good plot-wise, but ima still read it bc i always care about characters more than plot anyway. plus i need more lou and reid banter

The sun was still beautiful. And despite everything, it was still setting. I closed my eyes and basked in its warmth.

So. I have mixed feelings about this book. The enemies-to-lovers romance angle was very good. But I spent the first quarter confused about what was happening, and I felt like it wasn’t until the last quarter that the plot really picked up. The magic systems remained confusing throughout. The twists really served the plot well, though, and I liked the characters. Pretty solidly a three star book for me.
The world could definitely be more build up and developed but I loved the way everything was revealed throughout the book and am gagging for the next one! I felt like I was holding my breath for the ultimate secret leak the entire time. I love knowing more than the characters especially when you see from both sides
