very little depth to any of the characters, book was painfully slow until the last third, bad jokes, little world-building. last third of the book was much better than the first 2/3 but didn’t make up for it

It's giving religious trauma, it's giving mommy AND daddy issues, it's giving OH NO I love them!
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when first reading this book. I wasn't sure if this was a full fantasy, or a historical fiction in France, turns out it's a little column A little column B. I love Lou's character, she's sharp and sassy and willing to fight tooth and claw for what she wants I really enjoyed her. Reid took some getting used to and warming up to. Reading a character whose very being is about the church, slowly starting to deprogram was wild, because you saw the progress, but you weren't sure if the switch was going to flip again. Oh so good! Great forced marriage enemies to lovers story. I adore the moment a character realizes they're in love and just like.... OH FUCK NO, hahaha.
I enjoyed the overall story the morality dilemma and trying to humanize the witches. I just wish we saw more witches who were more hesitant in the end scenes. The familial reveals were a lot, there were a couple that were very obvious but I did enjoy them regardless. The fact that Lou and her father both love sticky buns had my heart breaking. I feel so bad for Lou in the end and I'm excited to see what happens in the next book and where they go from here.

This book made me laugh out loud and kept me hooked from beginning to end. Also I got a lot of Twilight vibes from aspects of this but I’m not mad about it.
I ended up liking this a whole lot more than I thought I was going to based on the first quarter of the book. Our main characters, Lou and Reid, are great, and I loved getting both of their perspectives.
What I had issues with was the world-building. I loved parts of it--the Chasseurs and the church, the witches and the different powers that different kinds have, and the history of the world and their kingdom--but one big part didn't mesh for me. I'm not a big fan of fantasy worlds that use straight-up Christianity as their religion. It feels lazy and confusing--why would a fantasy world have the same theology as some in our real world?
The plot was slow in the beginning, but it picked up around the halfway mark and accelerated to the climax, which was fantastic. However, I will say that some of the revelations about characters and their relations to each other felt a bit contrived. I get that certain things have to happen for a story to be interesting enough to be told, but when all of them happen in the same story, it doesn't feel like a natural progression.
Overall, I still thoroughly enjoyed the relationships and the conflict, and with the way it ended, I'm really looking forward to the sequel!

Neat book. I loved loved loved it! Great twists and turns and surprises. ☺♥
What a debut! Mahurin wrote some of my new very favorite characters. Lou has my heart. And Reid is shockingly adorable. Love!
