Sometime after Star Trek Nemesis, with no future TV or film projects likely to be set after that film (this was 20+ years before Star Trek: Picard) Pocket Books began releasing Star Trek novels that explored a continuity beyond that point. They had several series running and, unlike most TV series to that point, told stories in a more modern serial fashion. Star Trek: Destiny was the first major crossover of those post-Nemesis series and it assumes a familiarity with at least some of the others. I read the first Titan novel a few years back and Articles of the Federation a month or so ago and that's really all the back story I had going into this. So yeah, there's a lot of page space dedicated to business from main titles. (For some reason the editors decided that people in their 50s could have babies in the Trek universe so both Troi and Crusher are pregnant.) Gods of Night begins with Borg already in mid-invasion of the Alpha Quadrant. The crews of the USS Aventine, Titan, and the Enterprise, follow different threads related to the invasion. The heart of the book is the flashback chapters following the USS Columbia in 2155 (aka the Star Trek: Enterprise era). The Columbia is damaged in a surprise Romulan attack and stumbles upon an advanced, highly secretive race looking for help getting back home to Earth. The Columbia sections are well-executed sci-fi adventure. The "present" chapters are like catching a random episode of a serialized story.

I found this hard to keep tabs on who every one was with so many different names and species. It seems a vastly different world to TNG which was largely human crew, but I'd imagine that's down to the special effects budget in books is inexhaustible! Enjoyable and interesting.

This was a good story but I struggled to keep all the ships, characters, and timelines straight. I found the appendix at the end too late. Still, I followed it well enough to enjoy it and will definitely continue reading the trilogy.

really strong start, a crossover event that has strong promise. The alien race introduced is really interesting and is exactly what I hope for. Excellent sci fi that also happens to be star trek. This is like episodes like inner light or Darmok. Im excited to read the next book.
Id have given this a 4 star but having not read any of the titan books I felt a little lost with regards to that crew and had a bit of a hard time believing Dax leapt from Lt Cmd to captain in a pretty quick fashion.

This was my first time reading a Star Trek book so being a huge fan of the shows/movies I had high hopes. Unfortunately these hopes weren't met. The plot was good and the central mysteries were engaging but for some reason I found it a slog to get through and didn't really care about the non TV crew members. Funnily enough I would love to see a TV adaptation of the story but I don't think I'll be continuing with the trilogy

Can't really judge this as a standalone because it's very much part 1 of 3, but enjoying it a lot so far. Love the pacifist aliens.

A rather confusing book, telling the stories of three crews/ships. The weaving in and out, using unfamiliar characters means I would not recommend it as a book for someone not thoroughly familiar with Star Trek. It is the first book in a trilogy, and I will be reading the other two because it is well-written otherwise, but with not quite the same eagerness as I feel when I am reading a book about one crew of familiar characters.
