Whew! Armstrong did not name this book lightly--it really does cover the salient movements, debates, beliefs, schisms, and offshoots of 4,000 years of monotheism. I will say that this is not a primer. Each page is densely packed with information to the point that a lot of it can run together, as major historical figures often get only a paragraph or two before they have to make way for the next thought. It can be a little dizzying.
It's really helpful if you have some education in the literary-historical background of Judaism, Christianity, and/or Islam. I found that I followed it best in the areas that I minored in, and with the other stuff I often had to reread a page multiple times to retain the information. Armstrong is an amazing writer--confident, succinct, and incredibly well-informed (the sheer amount of stuff she was able to quote or reference across millennia was staggering). She is for the most part very straightforward and focused on the facts, so it's kind of tantalizing and a bit scandalous when she makes her personal feelings about a movement or spiritual leader known (she does not like Martin Luther, damn!). I appreciated her take at the end on what the future of our concept of God might be and the way that even our most modern ideas of religion, atheism, and God have been echoed throughout history in a multitude of faiths.

Totally not what I expected of Karen Armstrong. Instead of her usual easy to read style this book is dense, dull and tedious. A lot of the things she covers in the first 3 chapters is information I recognise from my minor in the history of Judaism and Christianity, so I'd say that information-wise it's a pretty solid book. But too boring and dense for me to continue. So I'm giving up.
Oke in alle eerlijkheid heb ik deze niet tot het einde gelezen, maar ik vind 300 pagina's genoeg. Ik heb eruit gehaald wat ik wilde vinden.
This was a very dense book. A lot of information. How much is true or is swayed by the author (a former nun), I don't know. It was very interesting. Despite the tough and slow going, it was interesting to see the development of these three monotheistic religions. Will probably have to read this one again. I have a feeling that I missed a lot of the references.
Especially for the skeptic of religion, Karen Armstrong's books are the greatest.
I first bought this book in Seattle around 1995 and just could not get into it - picked it up again around '03 or so and loved it. It's a book I read almost yearly.
One of the most comprehensive modern works on the Abrahamic faiths. I'm ridiculously in love with this author and this work.
Pertama kali coba baca waktu masih SMA dan jujur kepalaku gak bisa paham apa tulisan ini wkwk. Akhirnya setelah bertahun-tahun coba baca lagi dan baru bisa nikmatin tulisannya.
Gaya penulisannya jujur enak untuk diikuti terlebih disusun secara kronologis dari bab awal sampai akhir. Tapi banyak penggunaan istilah asing baik dari bahasa Ibrani, Yunani, Arab yang mungkin dapat membuat pembaca pusing ketika tidak terbiasa dengan terminologi tersebut.
Armstrong mencoba menggunakan pendekatan seseorang yang netral, dan mengacu Tuhan sebagai realitas tertinggi dari segala sesuatu. Berdasarkan pendekatan tersebut barulah kita bisa membaca buku ini dengan pemikiran terbuka dan tidak merasa diserang secara pribadi.
Membaca buku ini juga menurutku dapat membuka spiritualitas yang tidak terikat dengan agama tertentu, karena melihat Tuhan sebagai realitas tertinggi dan kita sebagai ciptaannya mengambil sebagian kecil dari kebenaran tersebut.
Perdebatan teologis baik menggunakan filsafat dan pendekatan esoterik seperti mistisme juga menjadi lensa baru ketika aku baca dan menjadi sesuatu yang menarik.
Terakhir, membaca buku ini menurutku menjadi jembatan antar agama yang tidak terikat dengan dogma dan melihat agama sebagai jalan spiritualitas menuju Tuhan.
