The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England was such a fun time!
Was this book some kind of literary masterpiece? No, but it didn’t need to be. This book got the tone right, the balance of near-future sci-fi and fantasy elements right, and the characters right. Sometimes hilarious and other times emotionally charged, this book was a fun time and that’s all I needed it to be.
On top of being a fun time, I also really enjoyed getting to know our MC as he re-learned who he was, who he is, and who he wants to be. I also loved the bits of the handbook we got throughout, and appreciated having a separate narrator for the handbook so it was easy to tell apart from the main plot.
Can’t wait to look at the art! 4 stars

Graphic: Violence
Minor: Blood, Injury/Injury detail
I initially paused this and thought I'd pick it up again, but I just wasn't really feeling it. I feel conflicted by the author's affiliations, too.

I had a hard time with this one, and that made me put it down several times. I actually started it right after I read Tress, when the secret projects first came out. However I was just not that interested in this very odd story. I picked it back up yesterday and started over, this time with the audiobook. I needed something to listen to while cleaning and doing other things. This helped me get over the hump and push through! I will say that it did start to interest me more after about 50%
I think my biggest issue with this book was the language and humor. The star rating system the main character uses for every situation got a little annoying, and his references to current technology in a supposed future where we have portal technology was a little confusing.
I really enjoyed the themes of this novel. I loved seeing the main character grow as he discovered things about himself, leading into a story of redemption and overcoming your own self doubt.
The world building was there, but I would have liked it more if we learned more in-world. The snippets of the handbook took me out of the story, and did not work as well as say the newspaper stories in Wax and Wayne.
The supporting characters were interesting. We had a character that reminded me of Rock mixed with Sazed mixed with Lopen, so that was fun. Sefawynn was my favorite side character. She could have used a little more development though. I disliked the Ryan and Jen plotline. It made me mad actually 😂
Overall, this is decidedly my least favorite Sanderson novel. It was still fun, but not up to the same level that the others are.
