Not one of [a:Nora Roberts|625|Nora Roberts|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1265820113p2/625.jpg]'s best works. I've read a fair amount of the In Death series and this was just not to as high of a level.

The story was still engaging and competent, but seemed called in. Having also just read the Chesapeake Bay Saga having a main Character named Cameron was confusing. Clare's Art Agent has very Eve like moments while being in the country and just seemed like a lot of reused lines from other books.

For those who don't like horror: This book has more violence, dark imagery and evilness in it than most Robert's/JD Robb books, or even romances in general. Trigger warning of Rape.

Additionally the Kindle edition is RIFE with punctuation errors and formatting issues. I had a hard time tracking conversations because of quotes being left out.

This is a book I enjoy but am also frustrated with. You can tell this is one of Nora Roberts slightly earlier novel. There are a lot of twists and turns that she characteristically pulls off well. It's also a very dark storyline, not in line with most of her other books written under her name versus JD Robb. I enjoyed Cam and Clare, and the motley crew of side characters such as Annie, Budd, Blair, etc. What frustrates me is how the end came about so quickly. Everything gets wrapped up which I liked but the book essentially ends 10 minutes after the final confrontation (all I can say without spoilers). It would have been nice to see a bit more of the impact on the town and characters I'd come to care about. With the very final section of the book I would almost hope for a sequel to see how that character moves forward and attempts to get the revenge on the town they were contemplating. After all this time that's highly unlikely but it felt like there were too many loose ends at the end of this one.

Not as "90s" as some other books wrtten around that decade, though the smoking was excessive I thought!

I should have DNF'd early on when I realized that everyone was so horny and the women were furniture (before being murdered).

It was a bit uncomfortable reading some parts of the book, but it was still interesting.
