It was a little hard for me to suspend my disbelief about a devil worship cult as the cause for the murders in a small town. That theme kind of dated it as from the 90s, as did the amount of smoking! :p However, I did like the way in which it illustrated the secrets that even people in small towns can hide, pushback against change, and desire to maintain the idea of their home as an idyllic small town. The thing that I enjoyed most about this novel was that Nora Roberts explored the the feelings and situations of multiple characters in the town. This made the novel feel a bit long, but I think that the extra length was worth it.

Creepy and disturbing. I wonder if this is what motivated the JD Robb spinoff. This was more gritty and gruesome than a typical Roberts.

Wow. Need to think about what I have to say about this before I can express correctly my thoughts.

Nice fluff, altho darker than most Roberts I've read. This goes beyond the touch-of-evil in some of her other works, even beyond the Sign of seven trilogy. Reasonably well done, not entirely predictable. A satisfying beach-read.

A recommendation/loan from my mother. She loves Nora Roberts. I felt I should give it a go.

Well, it was fine. I wouldn't read it again, but it wasn't a bad time. It took a while to get anywhere, and I had hoped there'd be some supernatural aspect, like some of her other books apparently have - alack, not this one.

I guess I'd give Nora another try, as this is the only book I've read of hers. She writes really well. The writing isn't overly flowery, nor too simple, the dialogue seems believable. I can't speak to the accuracy of the subject, but it seemed like she had a good grasp of it.

3 out of 5 stars.

I listened to this one on cd in the car. It was creepy and told a good story. Satanism plus romance. What could be bad. Roberts always has good characters and a good story.

I Loved it. Very old school Nora Roberts but with just the right amount of scare. The part that made me laugh was that everyone was smoking cigarettes through the whole thing. That would never be the case now.
