I have mixed feelings for this. Overall ok, I hated the ending, and had a lot of side things that could’ve been left out.

A Loss of Words
This book is based on true events and has left me at a loss of words. The author Jess Lourey was inspired by real “UNSPEAKABLE THINGS” and horrors of her small hometown. Young boys are disappearing and being attacked. The main character Cass who already has her own monsters and demons at home is determined to save the boys. (Spoiler) The fact that if her father wasn’t a monster and didn’t go up to her bedroom that drunken night things would have ended very differently... So does that mean we should thank him.? The whole time you don’t know who to trust. The gay band teacher. The sweaty pig cop. The creepy drunk father. The “goblin” down the street. I really enjoyed this book and a story being told in a narrative style by a 12 year old girl with 12 year old girl logic and ways of thinking. What kind of parents do those thing with children in the home?! I’m all for expressing your self and being sex positive but there’s a fine line when innocent children are involved. My heart aches for the sisters. My heart aches for all the hurt boys. Really great book and I wish to know more of what happened to each character afterwards. I guess I can come up with my own scenarios!

A quiet and unsettling thriller. Men are terrible.
I really couldn’t stand the narrator of this story. I went in knowing that it was from a 12 year old’s perspective, so I was prepared for a childish dialogue- but goodness Cassie was annoying. The way she hyper fixated on food was also very strange? The details of all the food in the story just felt super out of place and unnecessary. In fact- there were several points were the the novel drifted into unnecessary detail or plot lines while other more interesting subjects weren’t fleshed out enough. I guess the author’s intention was to let the reader fill in the gaps but it just left me feeling unsatisfied. The book had potential but ultimately falls flat with a weak reveal and poor narration.
