While the overall plot and character development was good, I felt the pacing was off at times. I would have enjoyed the book more if she had spent more time explaining in some areas, and less time in other areas. I felt the overall historical context was good and vital to read, and was presented in a very realistic and respectful well.

This was a quick, but interesting read. I think it takes on the topic slavery in a different and digestible way, but it does feel immature at times. The paranormal/fantasy element of this story was my favorite aspect, and really personified the aftermath of slavery and reality of white supremacy.
