Twin girls, separated at birth, ending up cursed in their teen years as they are drawn together. The story deals with American history, with the way that white supremacy hurts so many families, including white. It also illuminates some of the horrors of what passing does for individuals. I enjoyed it.

This is a YA book - it took me a little longer than my typical time to read, but not for lack of interesting characters. There are a lot of ideas and themes explored - it's a book that makes you consider the past. The two main characters, Charlie and Magnolia, were mixed race twins separated as infants & raised by different grandmothers (one white plantation owner & one in Harlem.) At times, the book was a little emotionally exhausting, but it was a satisfying read.

I read this in one day. The setup of the story kept me wanting more and as we get to know the characters and the secrets and the curse I kept turning the pages. I loved the girls and the journey they went through. There are certainly some fallacies with the ending, but I’m willing to overlook that based on how entertained I was throughout.

I didn’t feel much regarding this book. Nothing was actually bad, but it just didn’t grab me much. I did notice the writing is a bit repetitive: when a character recalls what someone told them only a couple of chapters ago, the exact words are repeated again. It does not feel intentional or a careful stylistic choice. Still, the subject matter was very interesting, and I still enjoyed reading a story from this POV and around this specific topic of white-passing Black people.
