Wow! THIS is why I still try YA books. Every once in a while you get a hidden gem like this. I loved everything about this, I found the writing style so engaging. Loved the characters, the dual perspective, and the wonderful atmosphere. I was rooting for these two sisters so hard. The lore of the curse was so interesting, and at times this felt genuinely eerie. If you liked When the Reckoning Comes and don't mind a YA perspective, I would recommend this. It takes place in the Jim Crow south, so it is sad and upsetting at times. But the last few lines left this on such a hopeful note, I cried and immediately got that 5 star feeling.

"Keep on swinging. Keep on."

This book was really hard to put down, for several reasons. I needed to find out if the twins were ok, and I needed them to get out of the south. Jim Crow is such a shameful part of our very shameful treatment of Black Americans. There was a touch of magic to this book that wasn't too over the top. Great (if sad) book.

This is such an interesting concept about twins that I remember reading about in a National Geographic magazine a few years ago. I enjoyed the integration of actual historical events and people to tell the story of finding yourself and your reflection.

“Because every time I accept that I’m worth less-less than a man, or a white person, or a gosh-darn oil baron- it punches a hole in my spirit. Punch enough holes and your spirit breaks.”

There was a lot happening in this book and while set in the 1950s so much still rings true (unfortunately). It’s very much written as a young adult tale but the messages, themes and history are powerful.
