I'm definitely not the target audience for this book, but I think my 15-20 year old self would have absolutely loved it.
I couldn’t help but think about the Pixar movie CoCo while reading this. Interpret that as you will.

I think this book would have been better without the supernatural aspect, or maybe if it hadn't been so heavy-handed. Otherwise, this was a good story. Perhaps Magnolia accepted her mixed race a bit too easily, but it was very good.
A spooky, historical fiction read based on a family curse and steeped in the racism and classism that our country is founded upon. McWilliams is the daughter of Jewel Parker Rhodes and has inherited her mother's knack for writing and storytelling. The story is told in alternating viewpoints of the twins, but that doesn't create any problems with coherency or clarity. Taking place in the 1950s amid the height of white flight and classism of the 20th century, "Mirror Girls" is a captivating story with a lesson to share. Recommend for 6th grade and up.
Do you consider paranormal books to be fantasy?
.
This one was listed as fantasy on the Libby App so I decided to give it a try. Its my fault for not reading the full synopsis but this book was not for me.
.
This is a book that takes place during Segregation and Jim Crow laws. A biracial couple is murdered when they attempt to get married after having twins together.
One twin is white passing while the other is clearly black. The girls didn’t know about each other until later in life and this was a story about them coming back together.
.
There were magical mirrors and ghosts of the past throughout the story but I hated the narration. I forced myself through the book because I felt guilty not finishing it since it was written about such a difficult time.
