My girls are all grown up; two dead, one alive, and a different one Queen.
We knew how a lot of this was going to happen, we knew who was going to die because they had to die or it would never get resolved but that does not stop me from being upset that Mira had to die and that Kat had to kill her and that neither of them wanted to do it. They were so close to being happy together.
Arsinoe was the most cut out from having a relationship with both her sisters though; she only spent time with Mira and never actually bonded with Kat. She had maybe 5 minutes with her in total this book and was angry for the most of it. She never got to love her the same way she and Kat loved Mira.
Jules and Emilia do not make a good pair, romantically in my opinion; it seems to me that Jules was forced to love her because a lot of us saw Jules and Arsinoe together but Blake didn't want Arsinoe with Jules so she made Emilia take the place and it never stuck the way that it was supposed to for half of the fandom that knows who the real OT3 of the series was.
I'm also not going to lie and say that I wanted Luca to live, because I wanted to see her die since I know what she did to Mira and I hated her for it. I hated her the whole series and Elizabeth and Bree (Who Are Dating) should have left her to die in the tower and let that be that.
I loved this book, it was a gold mine of some quality content of our girls but a part of me just, wants more. I want more of them together and being sisters for just a small-time longer and I want to know what happens next but I know that if she were to do that it would have been a whole other book. And we may get that, and we may not but that's a future thing!

Well, well, well, "Five Dark Fates" sounds like the perfect recipe for a family reunion, complete with curses, disappearing acts, and a touch of royal drama. With more twists and turns than a labyrinth, this book promises to leave you questioning alliances as much as you question your decision to eat that extra slice of cake. As the sisters navigate their way through shifting allegiances and test their bonds, it's a tale that reminds us all that sibling rivalry isn't just for board games – it's for the fate of an entire island. So, if you're ready to embark on a journey of secrets, hissing queens, and a dash of "who can you really trust," then "Five Dark Fates" might just be your new favorite potion.
Looking back to my reviews of the other 3 books, I did not know hot to rate this one. It was tough, but let's rate the end of an era. Oh, and buckle up, because this is lengthy.
3/5
It came as a surprise to me too, that I rated the fourth book of the series the same as the third book, that, as some point, I even forgot it existed and I fully believed that the second and third book were one big book. But as much as I wanted to rate the finale of a series that I absolutely loved higher, I just can't.
Spoiler free review
Even though I did not like the ending, I enjoyed the book, and I had different moments where I was so engrossed in it that I did not realise how fast time flew away. I would recommend this series, and IK would recommend people to finish reading this series, because I feel like many people do not get past the first 2 books, and it's truly sad, because it is an enjoyable series.
Because I just put it down and I have quite some thoughts for it, I like to announce that the spoilers begin from here .
The Characters
As I did in my other reviews for the books, I am gonna say something about some characters, because, GOD, some of the I loved and some of the irked my soul.
Emilia
Just to get the hard part out, I despised Emilia from when we met her and until the series was over. There were some moments when I found her agreeable, like when she kept her promise to Arsinoe to protect Billy and fought her instincts to fight, or when she would have a funny remark, but other than that, I absolutely hated her.
From the moment she was introduced she acted entitled, she acted like she deserved everything she wanted, and had opinions and beliefs that were just... wrong. Well, nothing really changed in this book, as she acted poorly towards everyone except Jules, especially towards Arsinoe and Mirabella. She told Arsinoe that she should help Jules carry the Legion Curse, and when Arsinoe begged to differ, Emilia spitted in her face that "they can't lose a queen and the only black magic practitioner" and that, if Arsinoe binds the curse to herself, "she could be more dangerous than Jules", and her reason for why Arsinoe should bind the curse to her is "Maybe I would not notice an extra burden". Yeah, I know it's also because she is in love with Jules, but I still don't like that she can't communicate properly and when things do not go her way, she gets angry and throws stuff (or people).
Oh, and after the way she treated Mirabella, and wanting to kill her instantly when she found out it's "the only way to get rid of the mist", without having a second thought?? And then she was surprised that Mirabella left and wanted to classify her as a traitor??? Just an awful character, really.
OHH, and when she told Arsinoe that Jules would come to love her and prioritize her over Arsinoe in the future??? UGH.
Katherine
Heartbroken. She was my favourite queen. I've seen people say that it was the only acceptable ending for her, after all she's done, but I don't think so. Katherine did all she did because she was controlled by her feelings (with the Bastian City incident, which is the only bad thing she did because she was hurt) or she was controlled by the dead queens, but people never knew that and will probably never know that. She deserve to prove to the people of Fennbirn who she truly was, without the Aarons and without the dead queens by her side. And I am truly angered by how she was left with a tainted reputation. I am not going to go in depth with it, because I can talk all day about how her death was convenient just so Jules could rule in peace.
Jules
And, if we are on the topic of Jules, let me say something about her too.
She is the pure definition of a Golden Child, and usually that does not bother me in books (as I have an unhealthy obsession with Harry Potter), but here, Jules just seemed to be getting stronger and stronger without any reason in particular. She had a loving family, a hella lot of friends, half of the country by her side AND she became queen. Because? She had the legion curse just like the first queen of Fennbirn and because the queen line was getting a little bit crazy? And the legion curse just went away after the war? It seems a little off to me.
Pietyr
I loved him SO much before this book, and I still love him just as much, but I started to also hate him. The way he decided to ally with the rebels when he woke up because he thought that "his Katherine" was just unrescuable because of the dead queens that he couldn't get out?? Mirabella tried to do more for Katherine and she hated her a couple of pages before.
Other than that, he's still the love of my life and I love how we got one last moment of my favourite couple, Katherine and Pietyr, by the end.
The Plot (with its holes)
There are some things that irked me about the plot, and the world-building, etc. etc.
The Oracles
I feel like their gift was just the author's way to conveniently create more drama, or go foward with the story at an accelerated pace. Like, they can read minds, but only sometimes, they can see the future, but only sometimes, and the big thing I got out of it, is that they are good storytellers and there was an Oracle Queen that went crazy. Which has nothing to do with their actual gift.
Mirabella's death
I know that her death was supposed to solve the Mist problem, but then she dies and the Mist appeared again, in the battle? This made me feel like her death was in vain, and again, we just needed some more drama for the time being. Oh, and, you can't even tell when she dies because, guess what, she just jumps off a cliff or something and then in the next chapter you can actually tell she died. I feel like, given the fact that she was such a "powerful" queen, to die because you don't want the dead queens inside you AND tripping over a cliff is such an undeserving death...
The Mist
At first, I liked the plot, how it combined with the Blue Queen plot and everything, but then... it was all over the place. Let me clarify it for you: the mist is there, it kills people, everyone afraid --> Mirabella comes, she fights with it, she gets a nickname for it --> Mirabella thinks the mist came after the dead queens inside Katherine --> the mist is not mentioned for a third of the book after Mira beats it --> Mira dies so no more mist, right? --> WRONG. Mist appears in the battle, Arsinoe thinks it's Mira? --> the mist is not Mirabella --> Katherine dies and suddenly the mist is Mira and Kat and they destroy the dead queens --> mist disappear forever. Doesn't it seem to you that something is missing?
Overall
I feel like there were moments where we find out information out of thin air, because the author does not know how to answer some question or to make us believe the Jules prophecy (like the appearence of the first Temple) and it left me with a bitter taste.
One last thing
I don't know about you guys, but for me it was very hard to read the final battle. I just wanted to skip those chapters so I can get to the part where Arsinoe, Pietyr and Katherine are in the same room, and when the whole ordeal with them was done, I felt like that was the epilogue for me. Maybe the writing did not do it for me, maybe the fact that I didn't really care about anyone other than Kat and Pietyr, I don't know. Oh, and also the fact that, at the end, I feel like we received a dialogue in a form of "what happened since".
Overall, it was a pretty disappointing ending for me, but the book was really easy to capture you into reading 100 pages and being late to a birthday party (true story).
