A 4 star read purely because, whilst all the books have been a slow build so far (and I haven't minded) I expect the last book to be a bit more action.

However I have loved this series, it's characters and the world. It's definitely one of my favorites and I'm so glad I stuck without after being unsure after the first book.

I am pretty conflicted by the final book of this series. I liked it enough, and didn't ever feel like putting the book down, but the decisions made by the author in the last 150 pages or so left me with more questions than answers. Spoilers for the previous books in the series ahead.

This book starts with the rebellion struggling to regroup. Jules is a wreck - the legion curse has been unbound - and Arsinoe is trying to cure it. Mirabella has decided to accept Katharine's invitation to help fight the mist. And Katharine is struggling against the dead queens' control as they grow increasingly more violent.

And now, minor spoilers for Five Dark Fates ahead.

The biggest frustration I have with this book are the bits of plot that have either been abandoned or conjured out of nowhere for the sake of convenience. Much of what intrigued me in the third book is never resolved. The mystery of the Blue Queen gets pretty much abandoned early on in this book, and don't get me started about the Mist or the legion curse... But while I have a few complaints, I really did zip through this book and for the most part enjoyed myself. I wouldn't mind revisiting the world of Fennbirn again someday, and perhaps I'll like it better the next time I read it.

Something about this felt like it didn't have as much depth as the others, deaths didn't hit me as emotionally as I expected and now I'm wondering if I've just become desensitized. Overall I enjoyed this book and I loved that the ending isn't so neat and perfect like some other YA fantasy likes to make them.

3.5. Again, it moved a little slow for me. I think things could have wrapped up in a trilogy. I liked the ending overall, but the lead up to it was sooo long compared to the climax and resolution.

I really enjoyed the ending to the Three Dark Crowns series. I thought Blake pulled everything together in a really effective way. That’s a rarity for the final novel in a series. I love that Five Dark Fates maintains the darkness of the series. This truly is a series where anyone can and does die. I love it. I was a little confused at the beginning as this series has an incredibly large cast and in the year or so since I finished the last book, I forgot some of the details.

I really do think that this book should have been called Four Dark Fates, though. Who was the fifth fate? There are four main characters. It didn’t make sense to me and ruined the title theme a bit.

Also one more overall gripe with the series. There are a lot of poorly executed romances in my opinion. Really did not like Emilia/Jules, it was very one-sided. And Emilia was already grating, I think. I personally liked Mirabella/Joseph and Arsinoe/Pietyr the best. Because I am weird. But I thought they were the most interesting.

Very disappointed, can’t believe I wasted so many hours on this series. I like the setting of the series but the execution was just bad. The finale was so disappointing.

This was such a bittersweet ending to a series!!!! This series was a wild ride of emotions. I hated characters and I grew to love them. This ending hurt. I adore this series. I do have a few issues with some of the pacing of certain elements in this book, but other than that I think it was a solid conclusion.
