Stream of consciousness writing is not for me

Lowkey enjoyed this book even though I did each reading at like 1am the night before each class — bad idea, highly would not recommend. If I don't think about how I don't actually like any of the characters' personalities it's actually such a masterpiece and prob one of my fav lit class reads. So fun to discuss and its themes are so interesting — time, incest (my fav<3), societal expectations, gender roles, sexuality, mental illness, alcoholism, etc. Also love love loved all the different readings you could do and all the layers you could find in the totally scattered narration. The discussions we had in class and heated debate over Benjy's narration were some of my favorite lit class moments (cheesy I know!). I wish I could be an English teacher so I could re-read this book over and over and hear student interpretations of it because imo this is literally such a good read but only in the context/environment of a literature class bc otherwise I know I wouldn't read it for fun on my own. ALSO loooved learning about the Modernist movement it was so interesting and lowkey makes me want to be a philosophy major<3. In conclusion I'd rate this book a 2.5/5 based on how much I personally enjoyed reading it, 4.8/5 based on how much I enjoyed the class discussions, and 4.3/5 based on how good of a book I think it is overall.

Quentin's chapter is one of my favourite things I've ever read. The rest of it is great also

A formal masterpiece. While I personally prefer As I Lay Dying over this novel, Faulkner's skill at prose and structure is undeniable here. The Sound and the Fury is quite disorienting, but it slowly unveils itself over the course of its four sections (five if you count the appendix). It was definitely difficult to get into at first, but ultimately I'm amazed by the ways in which Faulkner so deftly manages to construct these character's psychologies. Benji's section drifts so seemlessly between present and past, while Quentin abruptly transitions as he spirals further and further into his depression and pessimism. Ultimately, it's a book about the echoing of patriarchal trauma as the effects of the Compson's strict adherence to a racist and sexist Southern conduct undo them. Those who conform find despair or anger, while those who defy are cast aside. In the end, my main issues mostly come down to the stuff that hasn't aged well around the black servants. While the novel is very sympathetic toward them and zooms out in its final section to give their perspective, it never does so with the same level of intimacy or care. It doesn't help that their dialogue is all written in an dialect, which further separates them from the central white characters. It makes sense considering who wrote it, but it is worth noting nonetheless.
