Okay. I give up. This book is ridiculous. I had to read the first section twice. I've plodded my way through the second part. I used the Wikipedia cliff notes. I'm still confused, and the plot is boring. How on earth this book is considered to be so good is beyond me. I'm doing no more of it. No more Faulkner.

Good luck reading it... if you study it though––it's profound.

3 stars makes it sound like I didn’t appreciate this book but I did! It’s not my favorite Faulkner but I’m glad I read it. From an enjoyment level, it was a struggle, but it was great to tackle something so challenging.

Rewarding ending after the difficult first two chapters

Purple, twee, yet still largely essential. A scurvy lot of unpleasant characters circling the drain, wrapped in a selection of Faulkner's varied histrionic prose styles.

Famous for the chapter 1, told from the point of view of an idiot, but chapters 2 and 4 are actually better, a Harvard student approaching his suicide, and the ending when all falls apart.

Like all Faulkner, better read when young. I am no longer amused by deliberate obfuscation, such as the omission of key plot points, and so many characters sharing so few names. You are welcome to it.

Be sure to get a version including the appendix Faulkner wrote in 1946.

Tragic, reflective, and distant, all compose the intricate tapestry of William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury". Immersive imagery and painfully complex characters kill and revive the spirit over and over again, as Faulkner demands the reader to contemplate how an individual's fragile past must keep up with the ever-changing backdrop of the present. For first-time readers of Faulkner, I would recommend using a guide given the deluge of scene shifts within Benjy's and Quinton's sections. I used "A Reader's Guide to William Faulkner" by Volpe and found that it helped me understand and appreciate the magnificence of the story to a higher extent. The novel is not fast-paced at all, as it takes an air of reminiscence in regard to the Compson brother's memories. Take your time when reading, and enjoy the emotional length of it, for that is where I found the beauty of the story.
