Book 5: The Sandman by Lars Kepler
Read this along with my IRL book club for a discussion in a couple of weeks. This is my first Lars Kepler book.

This is the fourth book in the Joona Linna series of books. Joona is a Detective Inspector with the Swedish police and the center of investigation that put away serial killer Jurek Walter, AKA The Sandman. Jurek has been in a high security facility for years, but it has been eating Joona all these years that Jurek had an accomplice. When Mikael Kohler-Frost escapes from The Sandman's capture it is confirmed there is an accomplice. Time is of the essence as the team of detectives tries to find the accomplice before it is too late for Mikael's sister, who is still being held captive.

So what did I like about this book? Almost everything. The story was fast paced, short chapters keeps you reading. The plot was great, multiple points of view gave better insight into the state of mind of the characters. It was a bit scary for sure, the Sandman from your childhood. So what did I not like? The ending! The book could have ended in a couple of different places, but it kept on coming. I thought yes, the end, love it. Nope. Then the next place to end, okay not as good, but okay. NOPE1 Then when the book finally did end with an anticlimactic cliff hanger, I was like "yup" saw that coming a mile away. The ending does not take away from my new favorite police detective Saga Bauer, who is amazing and she has an amazing name. My rating a strong 3.5 or weak 4⭐.

Interesting premise, but everything else is sort of meh.

I listened to the audiobook and there were times where I litterally had to pause because it was so intense. It was so friggin good!

The Sandman is a cinematic, action-packed book about a sinister serial killer unlike normal serial killers. This was my first introduction to Nordic Noir and I am hooked thanks to @crimebythebook. Jurek Walter is a serial killer like no other and is very creepy and manipulative. His back story is very complex and intriguing. One of the two main police officers centered in this story Saga Bauer is a badass and the young doctor taking care of the patients in the psychiatric ward is a creepy predator. The twist at the end was amazing and summed up The Sandman beautifully (if you can say that about a serial killer book). I cannot wait to read more from Lars Kepler and more from the Joona Linna series. This was an easy 5 start read for me and I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys edge of your seat suspense and creepy serial killer books.
