There's a lot of energy in these poems. Some of the imagery is beautiful and crosses languages well. But I was hoping for more than just glimpses of great writing. A lot of the writing felt incomplete. Or like a thought that really didn't deserve to anchor a page of poetry. The collection was edited well, but maybe a half dozen of these poems just needed to be edited out. Too many poems with nothing to say. It almost obscured a lot of really beautiful work.

With Spanish on the left pages and English on the right, this collection of poems from a young Spanish poet feels very contemporary while still looking back to tradition. A few come off as somewhat incomplete, but many feel right and visceral. The body figures heavily into the writing, as does family, death, and sex. I feel that poetry is the hardest genre to give ratings to, so this is based primarily on my gut reaction.

Some moments that caught my attention, but overall just didn't like it. Maybe I just didn't get it, but the writing and the subject just didn't work for me.
