"Every lemon will bring forth a child, and the lemons will never die out."

Oh my gosh. Wow. I have no words to describe what I feel about this book. From the harrowing, haunting moments, to the Studio Ghibli references, to the medical information, to the Arab culture, to the amazing Muslim representation, I loved all of it. This book made me happy and sad and a whole bunch of other emotions. It resonates so much with what's happening right now in the world, and it's not just in Syria. I adore this book. Even the authors note and acknowledgements sections of this book were so cute and wholesome and I loved it so much. This story was devastatingly hopeful, and so reminiscent of A Thousand Splendid Suns. This story was such an important story to tell, and I wish there were more like it.

I knew this book would be 5 stars by the first chapter but it just continued to prove itself chapter by chapter. I laughed and cried and hid my face in horror. I fell in love the same way Salama did. I stood tense unsure of where the characters would go, was there safety or danger around the next page. This book will stick with me for a long time to come. And if by chance Zoulfa Katouh sees this review, thank you for writing this book. For pouring yourself into the love and the tragedy of Salama, Layla, Kenan, and the many other characters in the book. Thank you for showing the truth of PTSD, the way the mind twists and lies, distorting reality. I don’t even know what else to say about the book besides it being the best thing I’ve read in quite a long time.

I think this book will sit with me for a long time. From Salama, to Layla, to Kenan, Yusuf, Lama, even Khawf-all of them people, beautifully fleshed out, all of them brilliant stars agains the harsh reality that this book portrays. My heart goes out not only to them, but to the whole of Syria. To the men, women & children for whom this is not merely a story, but an echo of their own life.

As long as the lemon trees grow, hope will never die. This book has planted a seedling in my heart, and I am willing to see it grow.

Now that it's been a few days, I'm ready to go into more detail on why I liked this so much. The characters all had strengths and flaws, grew and developed. There was no sugarcoating of what it means to live in a war zone.
the romance was cute & not annoying. The hallucinations were well written and believable. The twist with Layla was completely believable, but also I did not see it coming at all.

Beautiful and heart wrenching. The reading was easy, the characters were real, and the twists and turns took my breath away. What a marvel and a work of art. Highest recommendations.
