Awesome thriller. It keeps you reading non stop. Unexpected turn of events. Looking forward for more Sharko and Lucie's cases.
Felt weirdly xenophobic and slimy and then the last scene was just uncalled for.

The extremely poor translation ("You son of a dog!" Really??) distracts from the story. The book presents as already fact some technology that has not been perfected yet. There's no need for that -- it's stuff that could very well be true soon and it wouldn't be difficult to have presented it as ahead of its time, like the cinematic techniques were. I can't help but wonder if that, too, was a result of the awful translation.
If you can ignore that, and I think it's more easily ignored by some than others, it's a good thriller! I just wish my French were good enough to read the original.

Two deeply emotionally damaged protagonists, both French detectives (?) on cases related by a sinister short film featuring young children hacking at bunnies and disturbing people's minds.
Interesting characters--a paranoid schizophrenic police detective is a new one to me--and a truly disturbing plot rooted in actual science (I looked up and read the Lancet article about Syndrome E). Like the film that forms the basis of the story, this book fills the reader with an undefined sense of unease. The fact that there's a lot of real history behind this fictional plot only makes it more disturbing. Thilliez is a skilled enough writer, even in translation, that the plot and sympathetic characters keep you reading even when you dread the next revelation.

It was hard to get into it at first but now... Oh god.
The all book is perfect. It was my first thriller and I'm not dissapointed at all by Franck Thilliez!
Syndrome E is kinda stressfull as a book, because you need to put all your soul in the story to understand and to feel what's going on.
It learned me new scientific words, and after that read I feel like I can become a cop or a scientific!
4 big stars!

(actually 4.5 stars) Wow. I did not expect to be so enthralled by a random book choice but that is exactly what happened with this one. Picked it up Saturday, started reading late Saturday night and stayed up much too late on Sunday night to finish it! Part medical thriller/part police procedural with a touch of family/relationship drama thrown in, it grabbed me from the first page. The two primary characters, Lucie and Franck, both police officers, are well developed and very engaging. The plot is fascinating and moves quickly, the settings are perfectly described and other than an occasional odd word choice the translation is excellent - all combined to make this worth losing sleep.
