Really interesting book. Written in a way that both kept me entertained and helped me learn. Love the way this author writes and found it helpful.

Alter começa o livro explicando sobre vício (por causa dele me interessei pelo [b:The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction Is Not a Disease|23214265|The Biology of Desire Why Addiction Is Not a Disease|Marc Lewis|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1421140076s/23214265.jpg|42756604]), para em seguida passar por como cada tecnologia desperta eles.

I enjoyed this book although it often flirts with being a piece of pop-psychology. The title (and cover design) is a bit misleading, or maybe misguided, because Alter talks about far more than social media addiction; slot machines, MMORPGs, gamification and wearables are all discussed. From reading this book, I've become more cognizant of how often I'm using various tech devices and systems and how I can modify my behavior so as to have a more healthy relationship with them.

This book was interesting but not exactly what I was expecting. The first half of the title "The Rise of Addictive Technology" was absolutely covered, but I was looking for more on the second part "the Business of Keeping Us Hooked."
I appreciated the thoughtful study of addiction and the rise of newer types of behavioral addiction in terms of technology (HELLO fitness trackers... ugh!). However, I was hoping to get more about the design, marketing and strategy of the companies behind this rise. It was touched on but the focus of the text was much more on the science of addiction itself.
informative medium-paced

Reading this on my phone was a mistake. Constant distractions that I’m attempting to ween myself off kept distracting me.

Great read though.

decent - good synthesizer of relevant case studies, research, and general theories.

Dated already. SO many irrelevant studies and false extrapolations and anecdotes, very little actual synthesis and conclusion drawing.

Very interesting read, though technology is evolving so quickly, some of the examples are already quite dated. The basic points of it all probably still ring true.
