Thought this would be a new thriller to get into but I think something got lost in the translation. There was very little tension & nothing that would make me want to read into the wee hours of the morning. Seems like the author took Silence of the Lambs & set it in Korea.
This is written like a movie script, which makes sense because the author is also a screenwriter. I enjoyed it, the linear progression with a clear climax and ending “twist,” but wanted more from the plot and found the character of Yi Byeongdo a bit cookie cutter. Overall, entertaining, but best left as a book you borrow from the library and return.

This gave me chill anyway, hence 3.5⭐
I don't want to review anymore but I just want to. The Only Child has flaws especially when it comes from Seonkyeong's criminal psychologist perspective. I disliked it since it is such a let down. She was almost like either an amateur or a normal housewife but she actually gave lectures and met the famous serial killer. Her skills didn't match up unfortunately. Just like the husband. He should have known better. And things were left hanging.
Humming songs while killing is overused but I'm not complaining because I used to watch it in crime/thriller dramas. It's chilling and uninvitingly cold. It reminds me to thriller kdramas that I've watched and loved.
I do agree kids shall not be blamed when their upbringing might shape them the worst but tbh, I don't really know the best way to react if I were the one in the story.

The prose was clunky and had a lot of unnecessary lines. I put the book down after the girl just “happened” to have a card with her dad’s phone number on it. It just felt random and forced.
