This was okay and Adrienne Young’s writing is as beautiful as ever, but I also feel like nothing really happened?
Even though I was reading this while quite busy, I was thinking about it a lot in between and couldn’t wait to get back to it.

This would have been a great fall read. It focuses a lot more on the mystery of what happened the night Lily died than on the magic and spooky aspects of the book. I think it could’ve leaned in a bit more to the mystical stuff, but the mystery was interesting and the end was satisfying.

-cozy fantasy setting, Emery and August are from a small island that feels like a magical seaside escape. Tourists frequent during peak seasons seeking remedies and readings. They do bonfires at Imbolc and harvests under moonlight. I really loved this setting.
-gentle mystery, a tragedy that ripped everyone apart has already taken place. We are just slowly peeling back the layers trying to figure out what happened. It’s a really good time but it makes you wanna yell “Just tell me!!!”
My prediction was that Emery did it and August had her grandmother cast a spell on her to make her forget. I guess you’ll have to read to see if I was right or wrong

This was a solid launch pad for a fall season. The atmosphere is so eerie, she really sets the stage. Unfortunately the voices of the characters not only sound too young, but they also blend together so that I had to sometimes flip back to note whose perspective I’m reading. There was a lot of fuss over land ownership (I suppose that’s the theme for a lot of conflict in the world). The sense of magic and feeling of the island was fun, but overall this wasn’t really for me.
