Trigger Warning for intense, graphic descriptions of torture and violence (including rape) - often against children … MANY of these (it would not be possible to skip the violent parts and actually read the story, because there are just so many … everpresent descriptions of oppression of women and girls
This book should definitely not be marketed as young adult. If it were a film, it would definitely be rated at least R … possibly NC-17
The romance felt forced and there were some pretty confusing elements of the world-building/plot, but I still loved this book.
I thought the driving story was very original and creative. I read a lot of fantasy, and I have not read any stories like this. I really enjoyed the artistic portrayal of gods/demons/heroes. The magical powers in this book were a refreshing change from the same-y magic in so many fantasy novels. This book was definitely a page turner - I can’t imagine how anyone could be bored by this book. And though I did predict some aspects of the ending, there was a good amount of mystery for me right up until the end.
I hope that the supporting characters do get developed more in the second book (beyond existing to support the protagonist), that the plot holes/questions get resolved, and that there is a more full exploration of the moral complexity (and wrongs) of the characters on both sides (I won’t specify because it would make this a spoiler). I am really looking forward to it being published.

This is a personal rating: a 3 star rating for me, could easily be a 5 star for someone else. Think I'm just over the trope of "teenager just wants to be normal, goes through a cultural test of adulthood and finds out that not only are they not normal, they are the only one in the world that can do The Thing".
I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this story, lots of specifics that I've never seen in a story before. These elements could probably have been used more for better impact, but were certainly a highlight. A lot of things just happened to the main character, and then she slept for a while and when she woke up new things were happening. I personally like to see characters struggle and make the wrong choices now and again - which gave me the feeling this was more for a middle-grade audience. If so, this a solid morality tale with a unique flavour.

This has been on my TBR for a while now, and I'm so glad I finally got to it.
On the surface this seems like a fairly straight forward fantasy YA, girl finds out she has powers, girl is more powerful than anyone else and therefore people are scared of her, girl overcomes that to beat evil doers. BUT if you dig a little bit deeper there's a lot more to this story, it touches on themes which I think I prevalent in today's society.
The world building and pacing also works really well for me - and I enjoy how this is more focused on our female protagonist and her story, as well as her found family rather than the romance.

DNF @ page 158. Don’t care about any of the characters, plot feels rushed and doesn’t make a lot of sense a lot of the time and just overall really felt myself struggling with this one. It’s a BEAUTIFUL cover, but just was not at all executed to the level I expected
First of all, this cover is out of this world! Second of all, I do not love fantasy and somehow this book full of horrible violence/torture(something else I am not a fan of reading about) won me over. It’s even YA and I still like it. (I mean that gorgeous cover...did I mention the cover?!) But seriously this book had all the girl power, featured a diverse and complex cast of characters and had LGBTQ+ representation.
This book was really interesting!!
The premise and plot was very unique and exciting. It also tackled some tough underlying themes that was done in a way that felt woven into the story and not just plopped in
The main character was very strong and intelligent which I really loved
My issue with this book was that it told us things instead of showing us. There were, what I felt like, important parts of the book that were passed over and just explained instead of us seeing what happened. For me it created an emotional disconnect from the story. There were some elements I know couldn’t have more detail because it would be too violent for a YA book but other elements should have been shown and expanded upon
There is some romance but no spice
This book is very much a YA book but probably best suited for 15 and older. There are a few swears, some violence and a discussion of virginity but I feel like teens can very easily handle this book
