the single-page, bite-sized sections made the process of reading near flawless. however, i feel like people are confusing the experience of reading this book with the actual execution of the content............

A unique structure to articulate the difficult subject of one’s experience with domestic abuse.

so, i ended up reading this book in one sitting, annotating my way through until it was 3 am. i don’t really have the adequate words to describe this book. all i can say is that i needed this. nothing has ever made me feel more seen than machado’s memoir. without traumadumping on the goodreads tl, this hit me so hard in so many ways and gave words to the feelings i’ve been struggling to reckon with for the last year.
i was shocked by how deeply this book affected me. to be honest, i really didn’t like “her body and other parties,” and i was kind of expecting to be let down by this. but this????? this is fucking brilliant. every chapter(?) is so methodically put together and i could spend hours annotating just one page.
in short, i loved this. so, so much. i think this might be a contender for favorite book ever. i have never felt more seen and In Shock because of it. thank you carmen maria machado

Powerful at times, but the author seems as though she’s acting as her own therapist, talking more to herself than communicating with an audience.
