What a drag

Hard to push through after the glory that was the last book but I done it and I’m just feeling a bit burnt out from this world now and glad to be onto the “last” book for time being LOL

Like many others, I was initially jarred and upset when many of my favorite characters were absent in this book. I spent the first three volumes falling in love with Dany, Tyrion, Jon Snow, and many other characters, and for them to be missing in this edition was deeply upsetting. It felt as though we were settling for second best with most of the perspectives being from side characters from the previous novels, or characters we had no reason to care about. These voices eventually claimed my heart as well, I was gripped by the kings moot, fearful for Brienne, and entranced by the Dornish. This novel was easily the most political of the series so far, and I loved to see the newest plot from Cersei, or the next way Jaime would try to claw back his reputation. In the end, this book proved itself to be every bit worthy of its own installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, and overall I am happy with GRRM’s decision to split the book by character location rather than cut the story in half, as I believe the latter method would leave much more to be desired. On to A Dance with Dragons! I look forward to every page (and hopefully after that there isn’t too long a wait for The Winds of Winter!)

Oh dear gods, it took my nearly six months to finish this book! I kept putting it down; it just wasn't captivating enough. I hate that he explored a whole bunch of people and story lines that, quite frankly, I just don't care about. I mean if you have to bore us to death with the Iron-born please don't take my Imp away from me. With these last two books I see that he picks up the pace as he nears the end. I wish he would keep that same level of energy throughout. I love his mea culpa at the end, dated 2005 and saying that he hopes the next book would be released within the year...we now know that it took six years! I can't wait to see old friends and how these cliffhangers are resolved.

I have once again deducted a star from what began the series as five star reviews. The reason, some may disagree with, is because of the unnecessary vulgar content that Martin writes in. In the first book, there was some but all of it was important and key to the plot (so far as I remember). The second book was the same but with occasional unnecessary sexual scenes. The third had much more and this one more still, I would say. The scenes are becoming so gratuitous that it’s becoming closer to a fantasy porno than a fantasy novel. I do hope that it gets dialed back because the story and world is so good and we’ll written. I have no trouble remember characters and where they are, even if they are missing for huge sections of a book.
