I thought I was reading the wrong book because it’s so liked but I thought the characters were cringe… not kink shaming because that wasn’t the problem for me… I honestly just didn’t believe it and also thought the way women were referred to was super misogynist with no redemption… like they were hella sexist and for what? Yeah,  didn’t like it at all but wanted to finish because I really hate DNFing and I already had DNFed 2 before that. Was hoping for more since it was so heavily recommended but I thought the writing was kinda all over the place and the FMC was too immature and naive to be running around with the MMC.

Ahhh not so sure about this one, some parts I really enjoyed, I mean the plot was very good but some parts weren’t for me!

Quite possibly my favorite book this year. Couldn’t put it down!

So unrealistic for a college student to have this much experience and power. Won’t be reading the next books in this series

read. this. now!

Check TWs before diving in!

This was my first read of Shantel Tessier’s. It did not disappoint! I’m obsessed; addicted!! This is a true dark romance. Like, this book was so twisted but the more twisted it got, the more I fell in love. I’m a sucker for a good revenge story and this was definitely that on so many different levels. I wish I had counted all the plot twists while reading this! I was screaming and freaking out for the majority of this book!! Ryat and Blakey might be my new favorite couple.

So.... contrary to popular belief, there is romance, it's just not the forefront. The forefront of this book is smut and lots of it. Almost every chapter full of smut. I'm not complaining, by the way, I don't pick these up expecting Pulitzer Prize winning literature. It's smutty, it's fun, it's a quick read. I wouldn't say lighthearted, there is some fucked up shit happening on page.
I wouldn't consider it suspenseful either, it's just got a bit of tension with the FMC's ex boyfriend and some family drama. It treads on "soap opera" territory, it's very theatrical.

- Everyone flips on a dime, and that was annoying. At first our FMC's like "~feminism, patriarchy, women's rights~" then she's like "this man can hit me with a semi while I'm walking on the sidewalk and I'd apologize" (not direct quotes obvi.) There's also no insight to how and why she changes her mind so radically, it'd have been interesting to see (read?) her go through the motions of justifying this crazy shit but, it's one page to the next and I didn't love it. I would've liked to see him convince her.

- The secret society makes no sense, I *get it* but I don't actually understand it. This could be reader-error because I am not the brightest bulb in the toolbox. I get that FMC was put up to be MMC's chosen, I get that it somehow ties all together messily at the end.
What I don't understand is who really set this up, because initially I thought Matt's dad called Ryat to tell him to choose Blake but then it was her dad to protect her from Matt? But, then.... it turns out it was her real mom? But her stepmom was the one who setup her marriage to Matt in the first place to coverup the death of her real mom? HOW WOULD THAT MARRIAGE HAVE COVERED IT UP?

- The twists and turns were very soap-opera-y and although, there was tension and a bit of surprise I felt whiplash at the end of it. Maybe if it were more neatly put together, I'd feel better about it, but it came together too hastily. It wasn't impactful, it felt mildly surprising then fell flat.

- Our MMC is actually kind of sweet. He was *~incredibly~* understanding of our FMC having a prior relationship. Although jealous and possessive, he had no issues supporting her and asking questions to better help her work through some of that traumatic relationship stuff. After some intense naughty stuff, he asks about her likes and dislikes and I appreciated that. It was a nice balance to his rough exterior and I liked that he wasn't one-dimensional.

- It's fast paced, which is great for me because I'm impatient and I actually liked that things weren't drawn out, but everything was almost happening too quickly and there wasn't enough space to feel the tension or their chemistry. From literally one page to the next they fall into a relationship and although it's believable, it's still not as intense as I wished it was.

All in all, solid read, enjoyable for what it is and I'd probably read the rest of the series because the author writes pretty well and it's entertaining.
