Ok. I can get behind a good revenge story. This book had so much potential. It was a little weird that the panther tells part of the story - which confused me at first - but ok.

What I can’t do, though, is give any real spoilers because I didn’t understand the ending at all. I was with you right up until the last 20 minutes of the book and then I lost all sense of what was happening.

It took me a bit to get into this book and figure out what was going on (there are lots of flashbacks and things going on), but once I got into it, it was a really good book. I haven't read the Poe book this is based on, but it is making me want to. The characters in this book are dark, the book itself is dark and the storytelling even darker.

McGinnis is not afraid to shy away from gruesome and shocking things and this book is no different. She is such a great storyteller that I felt myself experiencing what Tress and Felicity were experiencing. I also loved how the book ended, and cannot wait for the second one!

I liked the premise of a girls parents that disappeared and the best friend who knows what happened.

But, it just didn't click. Also, what's with the cat

Mindy McGinnis has now made my “Top 5 Authors” list. Her books have yet to disappoint. She crafts such detailed and engaging stories - always with an unexpected twist that just makes the whole story that much better.

Already downloaded the sequel…

Ends on such a cliffhanger! Didn't realize it was a duology but it hooked me from the beginning! The writing style really captivated me and the flashbacks were done so well. Super excited for book 2

Tress has come up with a plan to find out what happened the night her parents disappeared and her life fell apart. The first step is to lure her ex best friend down stairs during a Halloween party, that's happening at an abandoned house, and slowly brick her into a coal chute until she finally breaks and tells her what happened that night. But what if Felicity doesn't remember what happened even if she had wanted to?

The initial insult is told in an interesting way. You have three different points of view of the past and the present. Before Tress and Felicitys friendship fell apart, the months after and the now. And the point of view of the panther from Tress' grandfather's zoo, who just happens to escape the same night as the party. I really like how that added to the story.
The story itself is weird, mysterious and a little bit creepy at times. This really pulls it all together well though and really helps the atmosphere of the story.
This is also part one of a duology but it doesn't have a large cliffhanger ending but doesn't wrap everything up as much as a stand alone. This story just makes it work perfectly.

I received an advanced copy through netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

As someone who loves Edgar Allan Poe and is also wary about all the different retellings and explorations of classics, this one.... This one surprised me. At first it was a fun ride. It quickly took a spiral into heart wrenching betrayal and loss, and I am SO stoked (and kind of devastated) by how fantastically this was pulled off.

I've been on a book buying ban to catch up on books I own first.... But I'm buying the sequel tomorrow.

I mean it must've been pretty good because I read it in one sitting and it only took two hours.

It was kinda hard to follow at some points;I'd have to flip back to the beginning of the chapter to see if I was looking at it from Tress's pov or Felicity's.

The main thing in this is that Tress used to have everything but then one night her parents were taking Felicity home very late, got in a car crash, and disappeared. Since Felicity was the only one there Tress thought that Felicity would know something. They were former BFF's and Tress thought she would tell her the truth if she threatened her enough. The truth ended up being that Felicity knew nothing, we even saw what had happened that night from her pov, but she was able to tell Tress that her dad had been cheating on her mom. She could tell from this look on his face that night.

The whole book is basically going back to through the girls lives which the earliest time a chapter was set in was 5th grade (I think), and what's happening in the basement of the old Allen house that's a hot spot for parties. Long story short Tress tricked Felicity into going into the basement then knocked her out and handcuffed her with her arms held up and threatened to build a brick wall around her (make her part of the foundation) if she wouldn't tell her the truth. She was almost close to finishing when she realized Felicity was telling the truth, so she got her out of what part of the wall she'd built but Felicity went unconcious, so Tress ran to go get something to help her but when she got back Felicity was "dead", so she put the "dead" body back into the part of the wall that she built and finished it. The reason I say "dead" like that is because in the end of the book a girl wakes up to be surrounded by a wall of bricks. Who else could it be then Felicity? Felicity was still alive. I'll definitely have to read the second one to figure out if I was right.

I rate this an 8/10

Happy reading!
