mindy mcginnis does not disappoint!!! i read this in two days through a mix of audiobook and ebook, and i found as compelling as “the female of the species.” i think mcginnis just has this uncanny way of getting to the nitty gritty of people without making it absolutely outrageous. you can tell these are high schoolers without the exasperating high school-esque cringe. many characters to love and root for. lots of jaw-dropping moments.

I know how the Cask of Amontillado ends, but I’m still crying on the couch over this book and wondering how it has a sequel. It’s a good atmospheric book with all the Edgar Allan Poe references.

3.5- I didn’t like that this book ended on a cliff hanger. It left me confused and unsatisfied with what happened in this particular book. I am going to start book 2 to see how it goes. However, the plot was cool.

Holy Moley!!! Girls can be savage to each other, but how far will it go? The Initial Insult takes that questions with a pinch of revenge and than ups it by adding a wild cat! Mindy McGinnis take those everyday relationships and has a way of making them relatable. No matter how much you may hate them you still feel for them.
When I started The Initial Insult I had no idea what rabbit hole Mindy was taking me down, but I never expected the savagery of the girls volatile relationship. After Tress looses her parents one night while taking her best friend Felicity home her life has no been the same. Now living with her Grandfather in his wildlife preserve she is an outcast, all but forgotten by her ex-bff. But Tress has not forgotten and she wants answers any way she can get them.
Has the story goes in between both Tress and Felicity's pov of both the current and what had been, there is the Cat who speak periodically has it makes it's way through the town.
The cat is beautiful and natural in it's way and if you feel like I do about animals, you kinda find yourself rooting for it.
This book will mess with you in it's raw-ness. I can't wait for the second in the series. I need answers to SO many questions!

now this is a definite thriller. The psychological aspects between Felicity and Tress were scary, dark, and deep.
I do feel like they did a good job humanizing both characters while also centering around their cruelty. This whole book felt like an exploration into the brutality of humanity and the horrors of class, youth, and friendships. Felicity and Tress torture each other in different ways, and the reflection of horror back and forth is masterfully done.
However, while I think they did a good job developing Felicity's emotions in response to the event, it felt lacking in her actions against Tress. Most of what she did was completely accidental, and I think there needed to be more on her end of what she did to Tress especially to make Tress act. Why did she do this now? It felt a bit random with the timing.

Second Read
I think my first read through was a 3.5 star read via the scary robotic audiobook arc that I got to listen to through Netgalley. This time around I’m rating closer to 4.5 stars. The official audiobook was really good, I liked the voice actor for the girls, and still didn’t really care for and completely understand the Cat’s pov.

I really loved the back and forth in time between the two girls during each point they would bring up as to why their relationship went south. It felt very smooth to me as a listener, because sometimes the time jumps and pov switches are awfully jumpy and confusing.

I also thought that this book was really spooky. There’s an edge of dread throughout that kept me interested. Also, there were subplots going on at the same time that the girls were in the basement that kept me on my toes. For a young adult novel, I’m really impressed. There are definitely some content warnings for underage drinking and drugs and bodily injury. Be sure to check them beforehand if those things may bother you.

This is one of my first Mindy McGinnis books and it was creepy and so worth the listen. I highly recommend it.

Initial Read
Thank you to the publisher, Harper Collins audiobooks, and Netgalley for giving me the chance to listen to this book early!

This book was super creepy and character driven! This has been the first book I’ve read by Mindy McGinnis. I definitely would like to re-listen to The Initial Insult once the pub date come around!

very original and with dark points of view as usual for the author, loved it (despite the animal cruelty and animal deaths)
looking forward to the next book!
