I love Mindy McGinnis. She writes dark and blunt stories that feel very real to the teenage girl experience. Her book “The Female of the Species” blew me away and I have loved everything else of her’s I have read since. It was a bold move to retell Poe’s “Cask” in the form of a YA thriller, but it totally worked. Going straight into book 2.

I read this on audiobook and I thought the production was great. I was doing my normal audiobook activities while I read it but I felt like the climaxes totally passed me by. Like, I'm not even sure when the cat bit Tress or what really happened with Tress's parents/Felicity. I am going to pick up the print copy and read those bits again. I felt lost with those parts while everything else was clear.

Wow, this was unique. I’ve never read a book like this. It was pretty wild. Not sure why we needed the cat’s POV, but overall this did a great job of engaging and shocking me.

There was a POV of a panther... written in verse and both MCs were unlikeable.

I don't know what the hell I just read. It's a dark and brutal story but very engaging, though. I couldn't stop reading it. Yesterday I found a copy of the sequel for half price and thank goodness for that! The book ends on a mind-boggling revelation and now I can just read on without any waiting.
