Maybe I should've read this as a hard copy, I found the audiobook too awkward to listen to.
Chilling, beautiful. The first book in a while where upon finishing each shortly story, I immediately searched for reviews and other readers' interpretations.
4.5/5
It was such a treat to (finally!) read Carmen Maria Machado’s seminal work. After encountering and falling in love with her 2019 memoir, “In the Dream House”, it was fascinating to read a variety of stories that were clearly the genesis of that book. This collection of short stories heavily emphasizes the emotional, physical and spiritual violence we as a society inflict upon women. Her ability to create layered, lyrically masterful prose that are at times both horrific and subtle is nothing short of astounding. She stretches form and style to produce a web of stories that, much like “In the Dream House,” offer intimacy in unexpected spaces.
CW: abortion, abuse, child abuse, eating disorders, rape, violence

there's nothing i can say about this incredible collection of stories that hasn't already been said. Machado's grasp of theme and genre makes her stories work so well on so many levels. this book spoke to hidden, old pieces of me.
