Such an enticing collection of short stories! Haunting and poignant, feminist dystopia. The first couple stories were my favorites, but all of them interlock really well and leave you slightly uncomfortable in the best way.

bitter, heady, seductive, and really just a wildly uncomfortable ride, this book is the wreck you can’t look away from! i love a good feral & unstable female lead and machado’s writing is RIFE with them. "her body and other parties" falls in the vein of short speculative horror fiction, with stories starring women at odds with the supernatural, or with queerness, or with the more sinister monster of modern day misogyny. what i really admire about machado is her commitment to the punchline: no matter how horribly outlandish or unnerving. her prose is whip-smart, vivid, with the kind of shock that’s akin to dislodging a chunk of food you were choking on, of finally spitting it out. overall just disgusting & truly awful, but in the best way. i hope CMM comes out with another short story collection soon — i always love some good SFF short fiction and i feel like i don’t see too much of it! 5/5
