Love this story, I had a horrible time putting it down. When I did, I was thinking of the characters and try to predict the next twist or event.
As frightening as this book was, I could not put it down. The book is so realistic because the writer relied on interviews and historical documents to capture the sight, sound, and smell of the horror that was the Holocaust. She also captured the angst of those who worried and waited for years to hear from family caught in Hitler’s grip. There are lessons in this book for how quickly fascism can overtake a democratic society so quickly that there is no time to think about escaping it. This family was exceptional, fighting hard to survive, maintaining hope, able to leave the past behind, and living out the rest of their years in gratitude and joyfulness.
Very good. I may be (dare I say...) wearying of WW2 literature, so I didn't enjoy this as much as I once may have.

I didn't actually finish this book, so my review should be taken in that light. I really think this book has an amazing story. It doesn't seem real, but it is. I had to stop reading it because I was having trouble sleeping and getting really irritable. I can't really handle this much stress and suspense, which makes the story even more amazing. This family endured the worst, but they were the lucky ones. I never want to need that kind of luck.

I just can't even begin to imagine actually living through the horrific tragedies described in this book. It appalls me that one group of people can be singled out in this way and treated so unfairly. To be separated from your family, to not know for so long if they are dead or alive.... Again, I can't even begin to imagine.
It was a strange time to read this book (during the COVID19 pandemic), where I see so many people on social media talking about feeling oppressed by mask and social distancing rules. They truly have NO IDEA what real oppression looks like.

This is a phenomenal book! I was mesmerized from the very beginning, and I would recommend this book to anyone!
