Originally I was thinking this was a 4/4.5 read but at the very end in the author's note...I was shook. So it's got to be 5 stars.
I had trepidations about this book: a Holocaust story with a title of such optimism.
It opens with statistics about Jews and Poles and Polish Jews and I wondered, how was anyone lucky in that particular Venn Diagram? And I wondered if I would be able to keep reading a story that had at its center such a warm, loving family, with siblings in their early 20s and parents in their early 50s and life was good. When even the author could not help but place in historical markers to remind us that life was changing, and not for the better.
It turns out this tale is fascinating and complex. You won't want to put it down. Images will stay in your mind long after you finish the book. It is well-titled, after all.
They were, indeed, the lucky ones. - Suzanne R.
I just finished reading "We Were the Lucky Ones" by Georgia Hunter.
Yes, it is a story of the Holocaust and a family's survival. But it is quite unlike any that you have read. Its focus is on Poland during and after WW II., and the description of the family members, and what they have to do to survive. It is historical fiction. It begins in 1939 and encompasses 3 generations of the Kurc family. It starts slowly, but after a while, you are a part of the survival saga.
I found this to be a very moving narrative.

This came up in my book group, but if you're going to write a novel on a familiar topic like the Holocaust, it needs to be a different angle or something unique. This book didn't bring anything new to the genre.
