I received this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. I honestly don't think words can do this book justice. At turns it was chilling, heartbreaking, inspiring, uplifting, and incredibly sad. Very well written. I couldn't put it down once I started reading.

I wanted to love this book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a WWII Historical Fiction, but the story didn’t draw me in. It was fascinating, three generations of a Polish family finding their way through the horrifying events of WWII. The book moved through each family member’s story between March 1939 and April 1947. I never felt connected to the story or characters. Maybe because there were so many POVs?

Based on true events this is a beautiful story of how a family survived WWII. This book is different from other books that I have read during this time period because it shows how life was like for Jews in Poland under both the Nazi's and Stalin. It also gives a glimpse of what it would have been like to be a refugee, tortured, and to be used as cheap labor. The stories in the book will not be soon forgotten.

This book is good but the many storylines make it a little hard to follow.

I appreciate the perspective its written from (granddaughter of a survivor) and the description of both the Jewish customs and how awful life was for Jews during WWII.
