I'm very cautious about fictionalized accounts of real people's lives, but this book was incredible. The way she writes each sister, and their relationships with each other was absolutely beautiful and real. May we all have the courage the mariposas did, every single one of them.

Alvarez weaves the lives and choices of the Mirabel sister as they grapple with life under an authoritarian regime. The fiction version of their story allows the reader to be one with the unique perspective of the sisters. They’re love for each and their country never waivers, making for a tale that is both humbling and inspiring.

Really wanted to like this more than I did. I appreciated the insight it gave to a period of the Dominican Republic’s history that I didn’t know much about before but the writing and characters felt a bit superficial and almost juvenile.

taught this book for the first time and truly every detail is intentional! I wish I learned about the Mirabal sisters when I was in school. This book requires a lot of your attention which is a good thing but it’s slow at times. Despite that it’s brilliantly written and on such an important topic! scary parallels between the Trujillo regime and our current administration… but a lot of hope and courage to sit with
