Favorite Alvarez book. These women are amazing and Alvarez does them justice.
Great book. Emotional. Lots of characters, but easy to follow and they are so unique.
It was interesting to read about the Mirabel sisters, even if it was a fictionalized account of their lives. I knew nothings of this part of history, so it opened my eyes to events with which I was unfamiliar.
In the Time of the Butterflies is based on the true story of the three Mirabal sisters who were murdered for their part in an underground plot to overthrow the government of the Dominican Republic under the rule of tyrannical dictator Trujillo. I first read this book in college in a class on the history of the Dominican Republic and was amazed at how little I knew about any of the historical events. The details are fiction, but the story of the sisters courage is inspiring. A made-for-TV movie was made from the story in 2001 starring Salma Hayek as Minerva Mirabal.
This book is gorgeous. I was completely sucked in to the story of the Mirabal sisters with all their defiance and tragedy. This was been on my list to read forever and I'm so glad I dove in to this modern Latin American classic. I learned about the love of family and the true story of the Trujillo dictatorship in the DR. I was surprised it took me longer to read than expected because it is not that long, but I really savored every word.
