Thuan has convinced his husband Asmodeus to spend the Lunar New Year with Thuan's family. This would be a less dramatic thing to request of one's husband if said husband wasn't a Fallen and you yourself weren't a dragon prince with an empress as Second Aunt and a huge political mess on your hands.
A quick and easy read, though I feel I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the previous books set in this universe before I got into this one. Will have to get back to it when I've made it through the first books in the series, and see if I like it more or less then.

I love how Aliette doesn't write "nice" characters, but I love and root for them all the same. A perfect short.

A perfect and delightful novella, very fun to read!
I already read all Dominion of the Fallen series and it was a joy to be reunited with Thuan and Asmodeus, aka my favourite bookish Dragon prince and his cranky and stabby Fallen Angel of a husband. This time, instead of being at a boring and interminable family gathering in the Dragon kingdom, they found themselves involved in unexpected family and political drama, including corpses, conspiracy, murders and, well, Asmodeus's tendency to want to stab everything first, then get answers. Add a grandmother as sadistic as Asmodeus and you're in for a fun ride! Also, everyone is queer.
Only downside: it was too short, I wanted to read more about Thuan and Asmodeus's adventures!

This wasn’t for me, but I suspect that some of that was that I felt a little bit dropped in the deep end in this fantasy world, I don’t think this works as a standalone at all, despite being somewhat marketed as such.

I think for the right person, this would have been a 4 star read. But I generally hate to read things out of order and while this is billed as a standalone novella, I really felt the lacunae where relationships and character dynamics had been fleshed out in other books in the series. The dragon court and its politics are clearly drawn, but while I enjoyed Thuan and Asmodeus, I wanted more explanation about their relationship and backstory (which I'm sure the other books in the world give).
