Naomi

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki

3.55 AVERAGE

My feelings on Naomi are pretty mixed. The story have some Lolita-like qualities that made me a little uncomfortable, but my real issue with the story was just how annoyed I got with Joji for being such a pathetic pushover. The ending of Naomi was comical for the sole reason of Joji being a complete fool. He writes a tale about his marriage with Naomi, seemingly not realizing that the entire work just makes him look like an ass. Of course, Naomi is also terrible, but if Joji is so willing to put up with her than I guess he kind of deserves her awful attitude. In all, I think this novel was well-done but, frankly, reading it pissed me off.

This man is a freak. I respect it.

So uncomfortable
Very lolita / my fair lady.
Does anyone deserve sympathy? Their position comes from an inability to treat the other like humans. Selfishness reigns, unhappiness follows

Unpleasant, a Japanese writer made me buy into their mindset for a couple of chapters until I remembered that, indeed, we were talking about a Japanese author. Look, I know that if I reflect beyond the simple idea—which I absolutely do not approve of—that they're trying to sell me, I could appreciate the beautiful "moral" that Joji and Tanizaki have worked hard to create, but I just can't. I can't empathize with this narrative, and it's disappointing because I really hoped I would enjoy it.

Like a not as interesting, compelling, or well written Lolita where the female character also is made into a sexist caricature.
