DID NOT FINISH

I made it like three pages into this book before I decided Elle was one Mary-Sue that I just couldn’t handle.

I will start off by mentioning that I watched the first half of the film on Netflix well before reading this. The reason I mention this is that while reading this book, I could picture the actors in the main roles and just on that alone the book didn't work for me.

Rochelle and Lee are best friends from birth, almost literally. They were born the same day and they have grown up doing everything together. For many years, Rochelle has had a crush on Lee's older brother Noah, a bit of a bad boy player type who also goes to their high school. The best friends end up organising a kissing booth for the school and due to circumstances, Rochelle ends up kissing Noah in front of a crowd from school while Lee is off pursuing a girl. Some sort of romance starts up between them and the story goes from there.

I didn't much like this book. First of all the book is obviously not written by an American writer even though it's set there. I think I worked out this was written on Wattpad when the writer was a teenager. I do read books on this platform and the number of writers from outside of the US writing with a US location is pretty amazing. Most of the time the writers have basically just planted their characters in a location they know nothing about and expect the way they write about them to work in that setting. Language use is almost always the big issue and the words usage here reflects it. It's one thing for the narrative to use the wrong terminology but when the dialogue is totally messed up, it's time to rethink the setting. Honestly I can't work out why this had to be set in California and not some place local.

The other issue is there is just no character development at all. It's mostly a bunch of one-dimensional characters and a bit of narrative about what happens.

What this tells me is there must be a whole lot of books launched from Wattpad without doing some decent editing and revision. It's the sort of book that never would have been published in earlier times and probably shouldn't have. There just isn't much of a story here.
I do wonder if the writer has improved with time. I'd like to see if that fifteen year old writer has matured into a much better one.

It's been a few weeks since I finished this but I think I only gave it about 1.5 stars in the end.

So the book is much better than the movie. However the writing in this book wasn’t the best. I don’t like how Noah was quiet violent, and idk why in the movie they weren’t that popular and had these dumb rules because in the book they don’t? But it was a nice read.

amazing. one of the best books i’ve ever read. if u like cheesy teen romance books, u will love this

I liked the book. There were a few things that annoyed and frustrated me throughout the book. The first problem when I was reading was just that I was irritated with Elle (Rochelle, Shelly, however, you want to put it) calling Noah "stupid violence junkie". It was just weird for her calling him that, which felt like every few pages. The second thing that irritated me as well was that the book kept repeating certain scenes over and over again, but it did start on Wattpad, and in stories like those they tend to repeat themselves. An example of this would be when Noah and Elle would have the "cute little arguments" about Elle calling Noah "cute" and how he hated it. Noah got on my nerves a lot in the book because, from the description of how "overprotective" he was, it felt like Elle couldn't live at all. Couldn't have guy friends (except Lee, really), which I don't really understand. I wish though that the author, Beth, could have expanded more on certain parts. Like it quickly skipped to another scene, when Lee and Elle were at the restaurant with their family for their birthday. There was little about Lee and Elle's interaction, but more about her and Noah's interaction with each other, so I just wish she expanded more on that part. This is just an example out of many though of me noticing many parts I wish went more in-depth instead of quickly going to a different scene. One good thing I can say about this book is just that I love Lee so much and he is so chill. I would be friends with Lee. Anyways, I still kept reading the book, it was just that there were a lot more cons than pros when reading this book, unfortunately.

This book is adorable! I read it on Wattpad when she first came up with it, and then watched the movie on Netflix when it came out. It’s a well written book, and I think it gets straight to the point. It’s a great plot and concept, and I think the characters are flushed out beautifully!

I know better than this but i still read these young adult books because some times though very rarely i find some good and cute once so i keep my hopes up and keep kissing ugly frogs to find that one cute prince. And this one of the stupid ugly one. It made no sense. NO ONE. Not one character was good. Everyone were IRRITATING and ANNOYING to no end. It was stupid, Juvenile and rotten story line. Am sorry Beth if you are reading this. I am really really sorry. I was hoping to like it. I was really hoping but trust me when i say that i cringed. I seriously do not recommend it.

Rad this book because I enjoyed the movie. Overall seemed like good adaptation of the novel.
