Finished in less than 24 hours. I could. not. put it down! Firstly I’ll say that I’m a big baby and this is 100% the scariest book I’ve ever read. I’m not usually into horror but according to my library’s categorizing this is a “suspense” book. I thought the formatting of a book within a book was a stroke of genius and just like with Final Girls this one kept me guessing! I didn’t love the ending truthfully, but the suspense made it all worth it.

I enjoyed this and read it fast. A good haunting / mystery / thriller with some expected happenings and some twists. The writing was great if not for a fair amount of repetition which may have been intended. Anyway, fun and spooky and would recommend.
Riley Sager’s “Home Before Dark” was an automatic buy for me. I have loved all of Mr. Sager’s books so far and each one just gets better than the last! “Home Before Dark” is a creepy story that will have fans of horror, mystery, and paranormal books hooked from the start. I struggled to guess if the story was ultimately a ghost story or not but you’ll have to read this one to find out for yourself! Five stars!
Definitely a page-turner, kept me engaged the whole way through. Only took away one star because the main character can be slightly annoying and makes frustrating choices throughout.... but overall I was super invested!

I put this on my TBR list because of several recommendations to read it, and I can honestly say I was NOT disappointed! Although this was a suspense, for the first half of the book I truly felt I was reading a horror - I couldn't read too late into the night (but maybe that's just because I'm a bit of a baby). I only calmed down once I reminded myself this isn't non-fiction and there must be a culprit do the mysterious events at Baneberry Hall.
Home Before Dark is a novel following Maggie Holt who, 25 years ago, fled Baneberry Hall with her parents after living there for only three weeks. After her father's recent passing and finding out that she inherited this house, she returns to the house to restore and sell it. Although she was always skeptical of her father's recollection of their time at Baneberry Hall, as told in his nonfiction called House of Horrors, Maggie finds herself experiencing strange occurrences that make her question the truth of her time spent there as a child. Was her father's story truly more fact than fiction?
I had been in a bit of a reading slump before getting to this one (two weeks of no reading for me is definitely a slump), but this was a great way to get back into the groove of things! Riley Sager's writing style does not disappoint. Although I was a bit spooked at first, it was immensely easy to get into this plot, and I was left guessing until the very end!
Definitely a recommended read from me!
