When is a novel not a novel? Well, when it's Stella Maris.
Following up on The Passenger in which the primary characters of Bobby Western and Alicia, as doomed and tragic a couple as Romeo and Juliet, or Abelard and Heloise, only more so as they are brother and sister, deeply and physically in love and lust, though the lust is never consummated.
The Passenger will provide all the info you need to get to Stella Maris - what we used to call an asylum, that Alicia checks herself into. The book, Stella Maris, is a transcription of a number of therapy sessions between Alicia - a mathematics and philosophy prodigy, probably too good for this world, and if not nuts, then nuts enough until nuts gets there.
Cormac is, of course, brilliant, and the dialogue reads like the conversation you'd most want to be invited to overhear, and guess what, you're right in the center of it. Smart, disturbing, witty and compulsively enjoyable.
One book without the other would be a waste of time, both together are nothing short of a master's tour de force.
Possibly Cormac's last outing - he is 90 - sad if it is, but if it is, it's a fire-cracker.

2.5 stars rounded up.
I must admit I have not read or knew about the first book, The Passenger.
But even still, I just couldn’t understand this book.
I understood these were Alicia’s recorded sessions with her therapist. Her lust and love for her brother, and math. Oh and her love of the violin, but not more than math.
Although I tried to put all of it together, I still wasn’t able to grasp and understanding.
Was this to focus on Stella Maris as an entity or Alicia being a resident.
Unfortunately, I will not indulge in The Passenger.

Cormac McCarthy has a unique way to capture emotions of an individual. This story is so packed and yet getting us in subtle way to the ending we are potentially foresee. Nothing here is forced. This is to understand melancholy in the world.
