Love You to Death

I loved this book

Never read these when I was younger so catching up now. Really liked this! Suze is a great protagonist: strong, a bit stubborn, but generally capable of taking care of herself. I liked all the supporting characters - stepbros, Jesse, Father Dominic, CeeCee.
Spoiler Suze has moved to California, finds she rather loves it, and has to deal with a suicidal-turned-homicidal ghost trying to kill her ex-boyfriend, one of Suze's classmates. Jesse is hot and saves her life, family is family, etc, etc! I really liked that what could have easily been the major plot point of this book - Suze angsting over dealing with the fact that she is a mediator - wasn't. Rather, we entered her life when she's already got most things under control. I found this to me more reminiscent of the Heather Wells mysteries than Princess Diaries for that reason

This book is insanely fun. Definitely going to be binging this series!!

Re-read in 2020 on audio:

As my school notebooks used to say: Jesse & Suze 4eva ❤😂 Suze Simon is not your typical teenager. She sees and talks to ghosts. Her job as a mediator is to lead them to wherever they are supposed to go after death. When her mom remarries, Suze moves from New York to Northern California...only to find out that there is a hot ghost living in her new bedroom 😂

I mean, wow...this is still SO DAMN GOOD!! When I was a teenager, the Mediator series was my EVERYTHING. And as adult, I can confirm that it is still my everything. Suze is such a fantastic heroine. One of my favourites of all time. Yea, she can be reckless. She's a teenager, so it comes with the territory. But she is also WITTY AF and an overall BADASS with an excellent sense of fashion. Basically, who I aspire to be. Minus the ghost thing 😂

Jesse still turns me to mush 😍 I actually squealed when he called her Querida for the first time LMAO 😂 The audiobook is superbly narrated. The narrator actually makes Suze and her classmates sound like teenagers, which is amazing.

Re-reading this book as an adult was an interesting experience. Shadowland was published in 2000 and it stands the test of time. Certain themes that I never gave much thought to as a teenager stood out right away on my re-read. For instance, there is some interesting dialogue on colonization and the systemic Christianization of Indigenous people in America. And the destruction of the school's problematic statue is an incredibly powerful image. I can't remember if they ever repair the statue later on in the series, but I guess I'll find out when I continue my re-read.
