Love You to Death

I was obsessed with this series when it first came out (when I was TWELVE), and I wanted to give it a reread to see how it holds up. I'm pleased to report it holds up pretty well, and I'm probably going to reread the whole series, even though there are a trillion books.

This was a different take on the supernatural and I enjoyed it. I’m going to read number 2. I’ve enjoyed this authors sense of humor in other books too.

I read this series back in high school and absolutely loved it. It is still one of my favorite stories to this day and I have read it multiple times. One of these days, I want to own them so I can read them whenever I want!

The story is of a girl who befriends the ghost living in her bedroom. Being a mediator, she can hear, talk to, and feel ghosts. Her powers have allowed her to become a somewhat heroine to put ghosts to rest by helping them move on. Over the series, she learns more about her ghostly roommate and eventually has to face what is keeping him rooted to her parents' property; a decision that will really test her skills and emotions. The ending is amazing and one of the reasons I have read the series over and over.

The target audience is definitely for teen to young adult females but once you get hooked, it is a story worth reliving.

Revisited a childhood fav and it holds up bc Suze is a fricken badass and ghost Jesse is a hottie and together they punch the mean ghosts. Princess Diaries got nothin on this.

Honestly this gave me so little time vibes with a side of paranormal and I’ve got to say. I really enjoyed this. Can’t wait to start the next part.

2021 reread: still very cute

5 ⭐️

Is this truly a 5 star read? Probably not. But was this my favorite series as a teenager and currently bringing me immense joy in a time when I am paralyzed with anxiety from watching our basic human rights and democracy crumble around us all? 100%. I will take a Buffy-esque badass with a hot ghost crush over living in this current state of the world and give it 5 stars all day long if it’s what gets me to take a breath lol

This one was a re-read for me, and I still love it all these years later. I really like Suze’s character and Jesse is pretty damn dreamy for a ghost

Susannah Simon is moving from NYC to CA because her mom got remarried. She now has a stepdad and three stepbrothers who she calls Sleepy (Jake - older), Dopey (Brad - her age), Doc (David - younger). Susannah is different because she can see ghosts — she’s a mediator. When she gets to her new home, she finds her room already occupied by a very handsome, Spanish ghost, Jesse.

At school the next day she sees the ghost of a girl who committed suicide over break. Father Dom can also see ghosts and said based on her transcripts and trouble she’s been in, he thought she might be a mediator also.

So Susannah has got to get rid of her, and Heather doesn’t want to leave. She wants her old life back with her boyfriend Bryce. When she can’t her way she tries to kill Bryce and then Susannah.

Susannah finally stages an exorcism which gets rid of Heather but also brings part of the school down on her. Two of her stepbrothers come to her aid with Jesse’s help.

Susannah’s life is picking up. She’s been elected VP of the sophomore class. She’s got two best buds, Adam and Ceecee. And step David knows she can see ghosts.

Good story. Some dated references.

A nostalgic re-read. Definitely shows its age in spots, but overall the story and characters hold up well. Suze is as headstrong and fashionable and confident as I remember, although now that I’m years removed from being a teenager myself, I can’t help but notice how annoying (in that self-centered teenager way) she is at times. But it doesn’t make her unlikable, just more real. I enjoyed the bold way she tackled every challenge she faced and how, for all her tough exterior, she really does have a heart of gold.

Far and away, the best character is Jesse. I loved him when I first read the series, and I love him still. Such a sweet love interest for a YA series, and such an interesting character in general, as a ghost from the mid-1800s who died under mysterious circumstances. Kind of wish I could just read the parts related to him from the rest of the series because he’s definitely the main reason I’ll continue my re-read.

In general, I think the side characters shine, especially in how the tough and guarded Suze interacts with all these new people she encounters. I thought it was hilarious she called her stepbrothers Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc, yet throughout the book she starts to appreciate them as individuals. Her relationship with her youngest stepbrother, David (Doc), was cute. Father Dominic was also great, especially how he provides both an ally and a contrast to Suze’s tougher mediator style. Their interactions were some of my favorites, too. And even the spots where we see Suze making new friends with CeeCee and Adam were well done, easing Suze (and the reader) into this new life in California.

Re-reading an old favorite from your childhood/teenage years can be a risky business, but I’m happy to find that this first Mediator book holds up for me. It’s been long enough that I’d forgotten the specifics of the series, but I easily slid right back into Suze’s world of sunny California and ghost hauntings. It felt exactly like meeting an old friend and remembering all the good times together, which, really, is everything you can hope for with a nostalgic re-read.
