This was so fun! I originally read this series back in like grades 6-8, but saw some of them at a thrift store recently and decided to do a re-read and man this was good
It's a little dated and a bit cliche, and I can see now that it's clearly heavily Buffy-inspired, but it works well and I'm not mad at it. I just really liked it, maybe partially because of a nostalgia factor, but also just because it was a good read. Meg Cabot probably doesn't need me to give her her flowers, but I will anyway. She's a good fucking writer! Everything flows really nicely and the characters are engaging and loveable! I laughed out loud multiple times while reading this! It got me out of a reading slump that I felt coming on after a couple of meh reads!
I was worried Suze might be unlikeable, but imo Meg Cabot does a good job of making her a bit of an angsty teenager without being over the top and unbearable. She clearly loves her mom and it was really nice to see her overall get along with and start to form relationships with her step-dad and step-brothers. Really looking forward to reading the next one!

Graphic: Death, Suicide
Moderate: Bullying, Violence, Blood, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Gun violence, Homophobia, Racial slurs, Colonisation
Suicide/gun violence: The main ghost in this book is a teenage girl who died by suicide and there are some glib discussions of suicide in the book // racial slurs: the term squaw is used once to describe a statue depicting native American women (not in derogatory way, but I wanted to mention it) // homophobia: the word fag is used a couple of times
Nothing I hadn't read or seen before. The main character was essentially a hybrid of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the little kid from "The Sixth Sense". She sees dead people. She has an attitude problem. She often resorts to violence and rebels instead of doing things by the book -- or per the suggestion of Giles, her Watcher -- I mean, Father Dominic, her Mediator-mentor. She is in love with a vamp -- er, I mean ghost, who is a hundred-plus years older than her, which is totally taboo. She heads up the "outcast cool" at her high school, which by description is essentially Sunnydale High. Shall I go on?

As a kid, when the movie came out, I devoured the first few books of the Princess Diaries series. A couple of months ago I bought the entire series and devoured it. What I loved was the relative shortness of the stories, which made them easy to read in between. I also loved the easy and natural writing style. When someone sold this the mediator series second hand I therefore didn't hesitate and got the books. I hoped they would be just as amazing as her other series.
After finishing the first book in the series I can say that I enjoyed this book just as much as the Princess Diaries series. Once more Meg Cabot found the right voice for her teenage main character which makes it feel really like we're spending the entire book in her head. These days, with the YA's somehow growing up more and more, it's kinda refreshing to read a YA where the young adult actually really sounds like a young adult.
I also really enjoyed the premise and the plot of this series. I have to admit that I wasn't convinced the mythology would be well done, but Cabot actually surprised me. The mythology was really well thought out, the consequences of everything going on were also very well done and I loved how there was so much room for emotion and personal growth within all the supernatural stuff. I also liked how there was a "mystery of the book" combined with an ongoing story arc.
And last but not least, I really liked our heroine. In a way she was a real teenager. At times she did really stupid things and she really turned everything into a bigger mess, especially because she used some questionably methods while doing her work. But it was clear that she had her heart in the right place and that she really cared about her work. I therefore can't wait to see what is waiting for us in the next books.

This was a quick read and I'm glad it was good enough for me to finish it(started and stopped a few books recently). I had some problems with some of the story line, I felt things wrapped up, way too easily and I'm amazed at how easily Suze was able to move in and out of certain situations, without any detection, even though she wasn't very discreet.
I will probably continue the series, because its just the kind of fun, easy read I like.
