Very satisfying read, I enjoyed it a lot. Characters are well drawn, and though flawed, I kept pulling for them to become their better selves and wanted their stories to end well.

Important discussion, some slight scientific information (discussions or bee anatomy, what they do, why they're important).

Interestingly written. The generational type characters allow for a full look at what each time line looks at and expects from the generation following. Also a look at the full life span of bees was interesting.

While this book was interesting (hopefully that's the last time I'll use that word...) I did find my attention swaying from the book.

Three story lines in three time periods evolve with beautiful writing. The connections between the three is an undercurrent through the book, and these are both direct and abstract. The story line for George was my favorite though they were all mostly satisfying to follow. I felt there was a lull near the end in the story of Tao and William could be melodramatic at times, but I was never not interested in pursuing their tales.

The fantastical element of the future is a bit unbelievable but for a book about environmental degradation, it has to rely on that element of hope to bring the book up as it is a downward spiral most of the time. Even in the downward trends of the stories, Lunde captures their lives so well with the ups and downs of human dreams.

I recommend this book if you work in the environmental field, conservation field, and/or like to sink into beautiful prose and a variety of human relationship hardships.

Taking place across three different timelines, 1850s England, 2007 America and 2089 China., it is the story of colony collapse and it's consequences. But on a deeper level it is a story sons and legacy spread out over 300 years with themes of depression, ambition and stubbornness. I did not connect all of the dots until the very end of this subtle, well-written story.
