This isn’t my usual sort of read, but I like to branch out sometimes. And I’m glad I did! The premise of this book was awesome. I just never felt fully pulled into the story. There was so much potential, and there were definitely moments that got strong reactions from me. But I wanted more. More atmosphere, more of the characters, more backstory.

Still, there was a lot of good here. I’m glad I read it. Now excuse me while I side-eye cicadas forever.

4.5 stars, I found this very compelling and eerie and didn't realize it was YA until towards the end. This feels like the incessant sound of cicadas drove someone mad enough to blame the devil.

Kaur is definitely one of Stephen King‘s literary children. Work is mysterious and focuses and character development. It explores the underbelly of gentle small town life. There is also a fight between good and evil that is made fought by young people.

Kaur bills tension like a pro. The ending wasn’t perfect, but I was absorbed in the story instead of the end.

The book starts strong, but gets lost in the POV hopping. It’s hard to feel attached to the four main characters due to the switching around. The last third of the book unraveled in a jumble of supernatural elements,
